#1 Gasexplosion im Nationalmuseum Helsinki

Beitrag von sunny1011 »

Violent explosion shakes National Museum of Finland on Monday evening

A violent explosion broke glass cabinets, windows, and a door, damaging even one partition wall at the National Museum of Finland in downtown Helsinki on Monday. The museum is closed on Mondays, but around 10 to 15 employees were inside the building at the time of the explosion. However, no one happened to be in the immediate vicinity of the blast, and hence no one was hurt, according to the Helsinki Rescue Department.
The explosion occurred at about 5.20 p.m. in the museum's silver artefact and jewellery exhibition room, measuring about 200 square metres.
The exhibition entitled Aarrekammiot ("The Treasure Troves") is Finland's most valuable collection of silver artefacts. In addition to old Finnish silver, it contains jewellery from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the famous Lapponia Koru jewellery collection, among other things.
Rescuers from the city's Rescue Department arrived on the scene after receiving a normal alert from an automatic alarm system.
According to duty fire officer Kimmo Tuominen of the Helsinki Rescue Department, there was no danger of collapse in the building, nor had the blast sparked a fire.

The museum's silver artefact and jewellery exhibition is located on the ground floor, at the southern end of the building, toward the left side of the main entrance, and behind the coin and medal chambers.
At the time of the explosion, Director General Ritva Wäre of the National Museum was in her office in the northern wing of the building. While not wishing to give any exact figures for the value of the collection, Wäre admits that "we are talking of millions".
"The jewellery consists of priceless national treasures, including Finnish silver from the 16th century", Wäre reports.
"There were about ten large glass cabinets, and some of them had collapsed", Wäre reported after seeing the damaged exhibition room shortly after the explosion.

Police did not find any evidence of explosives on the spot. It is possible that some substances used for the conservation of artefacts might have gasified and exploded.
While trying to determine the possible cause of the explosion yesterday evening, police did not disclose whether anything was stolen.
According to the Helsinki police, so far no one is suspected of committing a crime, even though the possibility of a criminal act was not ruled out yesterday evening.
While police are still continuing crime-scene investigations, the surroundings of the explosion site have been cordoned off and the broken windows have been covered by plywood. Only guards are allowed inside the walls surrounding the National Museum.
According to the most recent news by the national broadcasting company YLE, it seems also possible that the explosion was caused by an electrical fault.
Today, the National Museum is open as usual between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., even though the Treasure Troves section is closed off * *
