Design in Italy 1945-2000
18.1.-19.3.2006

The exhibition Design in Italy collects some of the most significant and representative pieces of the history of Italian design from the post-war period till today. Exhibits point to the quality of research, designing and experimentation, which are the flagships of Italian designers and companies.

The selection has been made with the express purpose of presenting an essential and concise, but sufficiently articulate and problematic synoptic frame of the main evolutionary lines, which characterized the history of Italian design from 1945 to 2000.

The narration linking the 100 selected objects is not linear and orderly, nor arbitrary devoid of contrasts or contradictions. On the contrary, it proceeds in fits and starts. It moves forward in bounds and comparisons intentionally. It isolates fragments. It intercepts poetics and aesthetics and connects them with the technological research and development.

Instead of focusing on one trend or taste tradition, the exhibition Design Italy aims at projecting a wider view over the panorama of Italian design, collecting and representing the general attractions of a common research in place of emphasizing the single, individual performances.

Exhibits have been organized chronologically and arranged in five big sections corresponding to analogous macro phases in the contemporary Italian history (the post-war and reconstruction period; the economic boom; the years characterized by violent social conflicts; the years characterized by hedonist consumption; and finally the great torment deriving from the search of a new identity that characterized the last ten years of the past century).

The choice has been dictated by the wish to allow for an optimum understanding of the role and evolution of design also by people who are not familiar with the Italian history and culture.

The exhibition opens with an object that does not exist anymore, that nobody uses or produces anymore and that has become an archaeological find of a vanished culture (the Lexikon 80 typewriter by Marcello Nizzoli, realised in 1945 by Olivetti) and closes with an object that does not exist yet, that almost nobody uses in daily life, which seems to belong to the future (The
Transformables of 2000 by Moreno Ferrari for C.P. company). Perhaps in the short-circuit liasing the beginning with the end of exhibition, it is possible to read, between the lines, much of what has changed in contemporary Italy.

125 Jahre Glaskunst Iittala

September 2006.
